If you encountered problems when importing Panasonic VariCam 35 4K, 2K and 1080P files to FCP X, Premeire Pro, iMovie and Avid on Mac, you can follow this article to solve it.
It's the first volley of info about a new camera that we have been waiting for. The camera is the Panasonic VariCam 35. Panasonic is finally delivering it's first large imager production camera, and it really looks like it's not just a "ME TOO" version of Sony, RED or Canon. This was my first experience with the VariCam 35 camera. I worked with it for seven days.
I love the idea of shooting simultaneously in 4K and 2K or proxy inside the camera itself. Immediately, I worked with the 5000 ISO setting because one of our locations was a very dark bookstore in downtown LA. The VariCam 35 features superb image handling in multiple formats ranging from pristine 4K RAW to 4K, UHD, 2K, HD and ProRes capture formats making it an unparalleled tool for high-end filmmaking, commercials, episodic production and live 4K events.
But if you are the user of Panasonic VariCam 35 camcorder, you will encounter the problem while importing the 4K or 2K footage into Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, iMovie or even Avid, you may see the error "ERROR COMPILING MOVIE: UNKNOWN" coming up when exporting a movie composed of Panasonic VariCam 35 clips, this error comes up, in particular when the movie is "long", i.e. a half minute to a minute. Otherwise, with short clips there is no problem.
It's enough to make you want to pull your hair out. The Internet is full of discussions on this issue, but we don't know why these editing software can't fix it? The bottom line, however, is that once you convert your VariCam 35 4K/2K files to using Acrok HD Vdieo Converter for Mac, there are absolutely no problems regardless of file lengt...which in our case is perhaps a four minute movie.
We were concerned with possibly losing quality by transcoding VariCam 35 4K to H.264 MOV for Premiere Pro (CC, CS6, CS5), converting Panasonic 4K/2K to DNxHD MOV for Avid, encoding VariCam 35 AVC-ULTRA 4K video to Apple ProRes for Final Cut Pro (FCP X, FCP 7, FCP 6). But a side-by-side comparison showed us there was absolutely no discernible difference. We thought some users might want to know this because it permits Premiere Pro users to rectify this problem and continue on with it. So we share the workaround here for people who wanna import Panasonic VariCam 35 to Premiere Pro/FCP/iMovie/Avid for edit without meeting the error "ERROR COMPILING MOVIE: UNKNOWN".
